Kottayam is fast becoming known as a land of sprawling water lily fields, with the aquatic plant spreading to more spots than before. The latest area is in Vaikom's Manappally, in the Udayanapuram Panchayath.
Around 2 acres of paddy fields have come alive with the flowers, and the authorities have also set up facilities for visitors to enjoy them. A few boats are already ferrying tourists in the fields, letting them enjoy the water lily season to the fullest. Many are also arriving to catch the sunset in the region.
Udayanapuram Panchayath is also set to provide more facilities. Panchayath President KG Raju said, "We will soon introduce boats with life jackets for visitors. A few projects to further introduce the natural beauty of the region are also in our plan."
How to reach
1) From the eastern entrance of the Vaikom Mahadeva Temple, head to Muttunkal Bridge via the Vaikom-Vazhamana-Thalayolaparambu route.
2) Just before entering the bridge, turn right. Travel for 200 metres to reach the field. It's around 4 km from Vaikom town.
3) From the Thalayolaparambu side, take the Vaikom-Vazhamana-Thalayolaparambu Road, reach the Muttunkal Bridge, and then head to the field. It is 5 km from Thalayolaparambu.
Things to note
a) The spot is easily accessible by car.
b) Visitors can also take a walk in the region to see the water lilies, instead of taking a boat.
c) The region is just about 20-25 km from Kumarakom. Those who want to see a water lily field without too many crowds can easily include it in their itinerary.
