Beaches, lagoons, waterfalls, spectacular volcanoes and a weather that is pleasant for the most part of the year, Reunion Island in the Indian Ocean has positioned itself as a preferred destination among Indian tourists.
Located in the Mascarene archipelago in the Indian Ocean, Reunion Island is a French Overseas Territory with a spectacular landscape, large ethnic diversity and many tourist attractions. These are the five reasons why you should think of adding Reunion Island to your travel plans.
Active volcano
Piton de la Fournaise here is not a dormant volcano, but an active wonder that erupts spewing rock and lava down the hills. And the good news is it is also one of the most accessible active volcanoes. You can hike up to the crater rim or fly over the volcano.
Awesome outdoors
It is no wonder that hiking is one of the main outdoor activity at Reunion Island. Paragliding, canyoning, mountain biking, rafting and horse riding are some of the other activities you can indulge in. Diving, though not very common, is also a great way to work up that vacation thrill. The beaches on the west coast are where you head for diving. You can go surfing and snorkeling too.
Beaches
The landscape by the beach changes as you travel from north to west. If you are looking for expensive hotels and spas, head north. It also offers a lot of scope for leisure sports and activities. The coast on the south is ideal for picnics with lagoons and beautiful landscape. To the east, the lava flows extend to the sea and makes for a beautiful sight. The west offers miles of a lagoon and a marine nature reserve.
The cuisine
If you are from India, you will not go hungry. The food here is a blend of French, Indian, Chinese, Madagascar and African cooking. The 'carri', a Creole dish, is made using Indian spices and local ingredients like meat, poultry, fish or seafood. Rice is a staple and so are potatoes, tubers and pulses.
Reaching Reunion Island
There is a direct flight to Reunion Island from Chennai. The Island also offers visa on arrival for a short stay of 14 days for people from India.
