Ooty: The snowfall in Ooty continues as the temperatures plummet to zero degrees Celsius. Zero degrees were recorded at places like Thalakunta and Avalanche on Gudallur Road. Meanwhile, severe snowfall was reported at Kuthirapnathi ground and Kanthal near the railway station. 2.4 degrees was recorded at the botanical garden in Ooty. Visitors have begun thronging various spots in Ooty to enjoy the snowfall and the cold weather. However, as per reports, there is a reduction in the number of visitors to various spots like the Government Botanical Garden.
According to the statistics from the Nilgiris Horticulture Department, the number of tourists fell by 4.2 lakh in the region. As for the Government Botanical Garden, while around 28.18 lakh people visited in 2023, only 23.95 visited last year. Although the hill station is enveloped in its ideal climate this year, there aren't as many visitors as in previous years, such as local vendors and others.
Why not visit Ooty?
As per reports, this is due to the mandatory e-pass system, perceived as a 'hassle' by many. The tourism department claims that the number of tourists is still steadily increasing and that there are people staying away due to heavy rain and natural disasters in the adjoining regions in recent times. The increase in the ticket fare of the Botanical Garden is also cited by many as a reason. According to some travellers on social media, traffic congestion and environmental degradation over the years have also affected the tranquillity that once defined Ooty. Travel enthusiasts suggest alternatives like Coonoor and Kotagiri if visitors want a scenic yet tranquil vacation.
