Many tourists say that 'chilli Kalan,' the 40-day winter period of the region, paints Kashmir in its purest form. Mountains stand tall, the land gets snow-blanketed, and nature teaches people to be patient. The cold season, which started a few weeks ago, is expected to go on till the end of this month, and now, minimum temperatures have improved in many places. In Pahalgam, the mercury rose over seven notches to minus 3.4 degrees. The MET department speculates that the coming week will bring a light snowfall to the region.
Srinagar's minimum temperature rose to 0.9 degrees on Friday night. Gulmarg, renowned for skiing, is currently at 8.2 degrees. In Qazigund, it was 2.5, Konibal was at 1.8, and Kokernag was at 2.8 degrees Celsius. Very light snow is expected on various isolated stretches of this region in the coming days. After chillai kalan, there will be a 'chillai-khurd' aka small cold and a 10-day 'chillai-bachcha' or baby cold.
