Bali bans all travel, closes airport on March 29: Reasons and what tourists need to know

The Indonesian tourist destination of Bali will not permit any outdoor activities, travel or entertainment on March 29, as the country will be observing Nyepi, or the Hindu Day of Silence, which marks the country's New Year. The day is unique to Balinese Hinduism, which has deep influence of ancestor worship, local traditions and animism (a belief that everything has a soul). All activities will be forbidden for 24 days, and the country will observe silence. Moreover, Nyepi and Eid-ul-Fitr fall on the same weekends this year. Therefore, the number of domestic tourists can also increase around the time. Nypei is generally considered an excellent day for stargazing as there would hardly be any light pollution. According to Bali Tourism's official page, the day's atmosphere would be serene, and those looking to escape the chaos of daily life will get a great opportunity to disconnect and recharge in a peaceful environment.
What should tourists know?
1) Regardless of their religious beliefs, tourists are expected to follow the rules and respect the tradition on March 29 if they are in Bali.
2) The Bali transportation department has asked tourists to plan their arrangements in advance. There will be higher traffic congestion on the days leading to Nyepi, so travel plans should also be tweaked accordingly.
3) Two days before Nyepi, many taxi drivers return to their native provinces, and therefore, access to such services can be difficult around that time.
4) Shops, restaurants, and similar amenities will close early on March 28 and will only open by midday on March 30. Many can also remain closed all weekend.
5) All roads will be closed across Bali from March 28, evening, for the Ngrupuk Parade, a ritual for cleansing evil spirits, according to believers. Tourists are welcome to observe it. Check with your hotels for details on the timing and their closest parade location. However, observe the proceedings in silence.
6) The airport will be closed on the day.
7) The Wi-Fi will stay on in hotels. However, if tourists plan to keep the lights on after dark, they should draw the curtains.
8) Hotels will have silent buffet-style meals. Food can also be delivered to rooms.
