Twin elephants born in Corbett National Park: Where to see them

Twin births in elephants are quite rare, and according to some experts, they occur in about 1% of cases. However, a female elephant in Uttarakhand's Jim Corbett National Park has given birth to healthy twins. They were born in the Garjiya tourism zone of the park's Corbett Tiger Reserve. The twins were first spotted by wildlife enthusiast Sanjay Chhimwal, who said they appeared safe with their mother and were suckling.

An elephant's gestation period lasts between 22 and 24 months. Twins are an extraordinary occurrence after such a long gestation period, and elephants typically give birth to only one calf, according to park officials. The news has triggered an influx of visitors to the Garjiya tourism zone. Local tourism operators said the news has piqued tourists' interest, and they are visiting the park to catch a glimpse of the elephant family. Similar reports of twin births were reported from Madhya Pradesh's Panna Tiger Reserve a while ago, too.
