Ganesh Chathurthi 2026 begins in Mumbai: Here are the main pandals, dates, spiritual significance and more

One of India's most popular festivals, Ganesh Chathurthi, has begun in Mumbai, with chants of 'Ganpati Bappa Morya' echoing through its streets. Idols of various sizes are also heading to Maharashtrian homes and elaborate festival pandals with breathtaking artwork, as the 11-day festival unfolds. Here's everything you need to know:

Ganesh Chathurthi's main dates
The festival begins on September 14, 2026, Monday. It concludes on Anand Chathurdashi, which is the final day of immersion, on September 25, 2026.

Spiritual and cultural significance
Ganesha has always been a symbol of Maratha pride, and was also the dynasty's patron deity. Ganesh Chathurthi was also celebrated on a grand scale under Maratha and Peshwa rule. Though it became a private affair in the state in later years, public celebrations began again in 1893 under the initiative of freedom fighter Bal Gangadhar Tilak. He used it to bypass the British government's ban on political gatherings and set up community pandals to bring people together. 

Safety preparations
More than 16,800 police personnel, including senior officers and quick response units, have been deployed across the city to ensure safe and peaceful celebrations. Special arrangements have also been planned for idol immersion days, with additional security personnel being assigned to manage crowds and traffic. The police have urged citizens to exercise restraint at crowded places and cooperate with security personnel on duty.
