Varappuzha: Are you planning on a tour which is off the touristy paths? Kadamakkudi could be the place for you. Kadamakkudi's island sights and backwater stretches beckon tourists to enjoy the splendor of interior backwaters. The tourism department has still not been able to fully tap the tourism potential of Kadamakkudi with its naturally abundant green islets and Pokkali fields. Canoes and tourist boats can pass through Kadamakkudi making it easy for a traveller to take in the sights and sounds these nine islands of Kadamakkudi has to offer. Kadamakkudi with its abundance of Pokkali fields, fish harnesses and canals throws open infinite tourism possibilities. Paddy cultivation, fishing and duck farming are the main occupations of the local people. Diverse fishing techniques to suit different seasons, Pokkali fields in their glorious greenery in acres of land and ridges are all bound to conquer the tourists' hearts. Even though many tourism projects have been envisaged here under the leadership of the Panchayat and tourism department, not even one has been taken to completion. Bridges and transport facilities are now available to many of these bridges. Still the beauty and naturalness of the countryside attract several tourists to this place. Valiya Kadamakkudi and Cheriya Kadamakkudi are the places most preferred by tourists. Trees of shelter on either side of the road and sprawling fields provide attractive sights. However many tourists are not much aware of the place as the government and tourism department are not giving it due consideration. Tourists can be easily attracted here by arranging boating in small canals and rivers. Not only that, valuable revenue for the Panchayat and employment opportunities for several people can be generated if fishing using rods, eateries serving river fish cuisine, transportation facility, roadside businesses and such steps for promoting tourism are adopted. It is required that tourism department and the Panchayat show a readiness to study the tourism possibilities of Kadamakkudi in detail and take steps to realize that. Till then, no one is stopping you to take a boat to these pretty islets.
