Monsoon enhances the incredible beauty of the Kallada lake and its serene banks offer great scope for the development of the Chenkulam tourism project. The Jatayu rock is just 20 km away from here, and one can reach the Thenmala eco tourism centre in just 15 km. Lots of tourists could be attracted to the area if an extensive tourism project is introduced here.

The beauty of the Kallada Lake can be viewed in its fullest glory at Chenkulam. The lake which has rich aquatic life is the favourite destination of the local youth to catch fishes, especially during the monsoon. Though the district tourism promotion council has earlier planned to introduce Kutta vanchi (coracle boat) here, it didn’t take off. The Kakkodu public library has been giving swimming lessons for the kids in the locality for the last 9 years, at a part in the Kallada Lake. Experts say that more tourists could be attracted if this area is separated and turned into a swimming pool. The nearby Vallimanoor waterfalls too could benefit if the tourism project is developed around the Kallada Lake.

Chenkulam is also where the Kallada Lake flows in all its purity. Recently, the Punalur – Kalayanadu, Vettipuzha, and Maniyar rivulets were cleaned by the locals as part of a public cleaning drive. If a project is initiated to clean the entire Kallada Lake with the cooperation of the nearby villages as well, then the Kallada Lake could become the cleanest water body in the state.
