Kovalam: Vellayani Lake which is the only fresh water lake in Thiruvananthapuram district is beckoning visitors to enjoy its scintillating beauty. The pristine waters, beautiful nature, the refreshing breeze that comes from the lake, and the enchanting lotus pods are sure to conquer the hearts of the nature lovers who visit the place.
Tourists throng in large numbers at the Kakkamoola agricultural college which is built across the lake and Vavvamoola–Kavinmoola bund roads, throughout the day.
Joggers take over these areas to enjoy their morning walk, inhaling the fresh air and bathing in the rejuvenating morning sun rays. In the evenings, families turn up in large numbers to enjoy a nice time together. Seating spaces are arranged beneath the shade trees that line the bund roads. Freshly caught pearlspots and lobsters are sold on the road side. Besides, fishmongers would catch fish right in front of you if you are willing to wait for a while.
Though a number of projects were announced in the area, nothing took off. Vellayani Lake is the main source of many drinking water projects as well. It is from this lake that beautiful lotus flowers and leaves are collected for the major flower markets in the city. A project to build an overbridge across the lake is still in its initial stages.
