The worst flood in a century has not damaged the beauty of Munnar, especially with Neelakurinji (Strobilanthes kunthianus) flowers in full bloom in the hills.

In fact, all the mountains are swathed in blue as far as the eye can see. Visitors are drawn by the sight of the Neelakurinji flowers among the mist which can be enjoyed only once in 12 years.

With the hill station witnessing a steady stream of tourists, the Neelakurinji season is giving a big boost to Munnar's efforts to overcome the losses suffered during the floods.

Rajamala is among the various spots in Munnar that witness the most tourist footfalls. It is now fully covered with the blue flowers and is attracting tourists in hordes.

The gate of Eravikulam national park, which includes Rajamala, is about 15 km from Munnar town. Entry tickets are issued here. Online booking facility is also available for visiting the park. However, tourists cannot right away go inside, but wait for the mini bus of the Forest Department which will take them to the interiors of the national park.

The mini bus travels through tea gardens which sparkle in green colour on both sides of the path. A little way off, the sight of the hills covered with blue flowers and the famous Nilgiri tahr roaming all around comes into view. Every visitor will be charmed by these images.

However, the beauty of the blue flowers can be enjoyed only for 20 more days. With the rains keeping away and the sun spreading its warmth all over Munnar, a few Neelakurinji buds that had not flowered so far are also in full bloom at present.

People associated with the tourism industry are awaiting a big rush of visitors during the upcoming Navratri holidays.

The blooming was affected this year by the presence of mist for weeks together. Now, the flowers will wilt within 20 days and spread seeds all around. For 12 long years, they will remain dormant in the soil, to come to life again and cast a magical spell of blue the next time.
