Kochi: 'Rickshaw Run', a 2,765-km adventure trip in autorickshaws, has concluded at Kochi in Kerala. Starting from Jaisalmer in Rajasthan, 85 autorickshaws participated in the event. A majority of the three-wheelers have arrived in Kochi.

The latest edition of Rickshaw Run had attracted 210 participants, including 65 women, from several countries. The run was flagged off on January 2 this year and the autos received a warm welcome when they reached Kochi. A friendly football match too was organized for the participants who completed the trip.

The Rickshaw Run was started in 2006 by ‘The Adventurist’, an organization based in the UK to encourage adventure travellers.

Every team that enrolled for the adventure ride was given an autorickshaw and two days’ training to drive the vehicle. Most of the autos were decked up colourfully for the event. The Run was arranged for a noble cause as the money collected by the participants would be utilized for charity. According to event manager Alex Andersen, the next edition of the Run will start from Kochi during the first week of April this year.

Yasmin from California in the US was among the participants who completed the trip. She was accompanied by her father Antony. “Yasmin drove the entire distance from Jaisalmer to Kochi. I simply sat on the passenger seat at the rear,” said Antony.

“It was father who navigated and was in control all the time,” quipped Yasmin.

Both father and daughter enjoyed the long journey. “Several memorable incidents took place along the way,” they said.

Driving in the evenings was difficult, according to Yasmin. Negotiating between speeding vehicles on the highways and other roads was no easy task, she pointed out.

Mathew and his friend Paul from Australia too felt that it was a tough event. “However, we are pleased after covering the distance successfully,” said Mathew as he climbed on top of his autorickshaw to pose for cameras.
