Munnar turns COVID-19 containment zone; bans tourists

Popular destination Munnar in Kerala's Idukki district has banned the entry of tourist following an increase in the number of COVID-19 cases in the area. The restrictions were imposed after 22 of the 125 tests conducted on Monday turned positive.

Ward numbers 9, 10, 13, 18, 19, 20 of Munnar Panchayat, including Munnar town and old Munnar, have been declared as containment zones. Only shops selling essential goods, including groceries, will be open for business from 11 am to 5 pm in these zones.

Many plantation workers and business employees in Munnar have tested positive recently. Munnar saw a surge in the number of local tourists after restrictions were eased by the end of June. The tourism department had started to make arrangements to recieve even more tourists from October.
