Munnar: The popular hill station Munnar and nearby plantation areas in Idukki district of Kerala are witnessing severe cold, with mercury falling to even four degrees Celsius. This situation has prevailed over the last couple of weeks.

Last week, five degrees Celsius was recorded in the morning at Munnar town and Nallathanni and four degrees at Mattupetty and Kundala, which are the lowest this season. According to reports, far-flung estates such as Thenmala, Gundumala, Ellapetty and Lekshmi witnessed temperatures even below four degrees. During the last week of November itself, the mercury level had dipped to five degrees Celsius at Kundala.

Meanwhile, the area is witnessing the arrival of a large number of tourists who are eager to enjoy the cold weather.
