The existing restrictions on round-the-clock flight services from the Kozhikode airport will be extended.

The authorities were hopeful that the closing of the runway during the daytime in order to carry out the re-carpeting work could be finished on Wednesday. However, the curbs on the use of the runway will continue even though the re-carpeting work is over since related works remain to be completed, reported Malayala Manorama.

Currently, the runaway is closed from 10 am to 6 pm. The re-carpeting that began in January was completed by the first week of June. The company that has taken up the work had time till November to complete the task. They were able to complete the job two months ahead of schedule. The grading work where the sides of the runway are levelled up by filling it with sand was expected to be over along with it.

However, the grading work had to be suspended as sand became unavailable due to technical reasons. The rains had set in by the time permission was obtained later by untangling the procedural knots.

The work of levelling one side of the runway is over while the grading work is reaching the final stages on the other side. It is estimated that the work could be completed in two weeks if it does not rain in the meantime. The restrictions on flight services will continue till these works are completed.
