Kumarakom: As the calendar turns to welcome the New Year, the tranquil backwaters of Kumarakom have become a vibrant hub of revellers.

Hotels and houseboats alike are witnessing a surge in demand, as visitors from far and near gather to celebrate the New Year against the backdrop of lush greenery and tranquil waters. A majority of them are north Indians while the foreigners are far less in numbers.

With almost all the nearly thousand rooms available in hotels, resorts, and homestays taken on rent, many have booked rooms in the houseboats. A majority of the 110 houseboats here are booked for backwater cruises today and tomorrow.

To add to the festive spirit, the hotels in Kumarakom have organized cultural extravaganza and events, showcasing the rich traditions and artistry of the state. Beyond the traditional entertainment options like music, dance, and magic shows, the visitors are treated to performances of special folklore arts. Also, they are provided with a first-hand experience of various activities of the local populace, from toddy tapping to weaving coconut leaves.

Most of the main hotels and resorts have also arranged helicopter services which facilitate the tourists to enjoy a panoramic view of the idyllic landscapes at the popular tourist destination.
