Thiruvananthapuram: Southern Railways has cancelled the contract of its Kochi-based caterers after complaints were rife about the poor quality of food supplied in the Vande Bharat trains. Brindavan Food Products, which had the contract to provide food in six Vande Bharat trains running in Kerala and Tamil Nadu, has been fired by the railway. Although the authorities had decided to cancel the contract earlier, the company continued to supply food in trains after securing a stay order from the Madras High Court. However, the railway stated that the contract had been cancelled after the High Court repealed the stay yesterday.

Meanwhile, the railway has temporarily entrusted companies like Food World, Express Foods, Sankalp Caterers and AS Sales Corporation for supplying food in these trains from today onwards. The mechanical department will handle the onboard housekeeping. The catering contracts for Vande Bharat trains would now be invited by the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) and not Southern Railway.

Meanwhile, the Railway Police recently carried out a quality inspection at a kitchen in Thiruvananthapuram's Thycaud, where meals for Vande Bharat were prepared, as part of their 'Operation Pothichor.' The inspection revealed that food was cooked in unhygienic conditions. Raids were also conducted in tea shops and restaurants around the Thiruvananthapuram Railway Station.
