KSRTC recently launched a chain service on the Vandiperiyar–Sathram route for Sabarimala pilgrims arriving via Pullumedu. The first trip starts from Kumily at 5.30 am. There will be 16 trips on the Vandiperiyar–Sathram route daily. The Sathram bus starts from the Vandiperiyar bus stand on the Kottayam – Kumily national highway. This 16-kilometre stretch through the tea estate is narrow and features many hairpin curves. It would take at least 40 minutes to reach Sathram. Meanwhile, the bus tickets cost Rs 33 per head. The last bus from Sathram back to Vandiperiyar is at 6 pm.
Private jeeps also run services on the Vandiperiyar–Sathram route. The jeep fare is Rs 100 per head. However, they usually charge up to Rs 1000 for trips up to Sathram. Pilgrims are allowed entry from Sathram to Pullumedu from 7 am to 1 pm. Those who reach Sathram in the afternoon can only enter Pullumedu the next morning. They can rest at the Subramania temple here, owned by the Dewaswom Board. The board has also opened a spot booking counter at the temple. Those without a booking in the virtual queue should opt for spot booking here. Passes to enter the Pullumedu route will be issued only to those with a spot booking.
The views in store
Meanwhile, Pullumedu has many amazing views in store for pilgrims. The pilgrims taking this route are treated to the mesmerising sight of golden sunrays peeping through the fluffy clouds in the morning. The pullumedu (lush meadows) is situated right in the middle of the route. Meanwhile, pilgrims can also spot wild tuskers, bison, tigers and bears roaming around the dense forests in the mountains. The verdant greenery is soothing to the eyes and the heart. The distant views of the mighty Sabarimala hills are the most amazing highlight of this route.
