Security tightened near Delhi sites following terror threat: What tourists should know

Following intelligence inputs of a possible explosion near the Red Fort in Delhi, tight security has been deployed at various heritage sites and religious spots in the capital. The spots under surveillance include the Red Fort and a temple area in Chandni Chowk. As per reports, Central intelligence agencies indicated that Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) has certain Indian religious spots on their target list, to avenge the blast of a mosque in Islamabad on February 6. On November 10, last year, a deadly car explosion took place near the Red Fort, killing at least 13 people and injuring more than 20. Following the developments, here's what tourists should know:

Extra checks and surveillance
1) Surveillance has been intensified through vehicle checks and additional police personnel at various points
2) There are extra police and central forces patrolling various crowded areas. As far as possible, avoid large crowds in the Red Fort, Chandni Chowk and Old Delhi areas
3) When you travel, be ready to allow extra time for security checks at points like transport hubs and stations
4)Stay alert for updated travel advisories and diversions. These can be stricter than usual
5) Have copies of important documents for verification whenever required

Security agencies have also urged people to remain vigilant and immediately inform police or emergency services about any suspicious objects or activity. The officials also said there is no cause for panic and that the measures are precautionary.
