Can herd immunity protect us from COVID-19?

Herd immunity emerges when a large percentage of people in a community becomes immune to a disease, making the spread of the disease from person to person unlikely. Trying to attain a state of herd immunity without a vaccine would be disastrous as it is a euphemism for uncontrolled community transmission.
