CUSAT admission test in May, applications close next month

Applications are invited for admission to various programmes at the Cochin University of Science and Technology which is popularly known as CUSAT. Aspirants may submit applications from 8 February to 7 March.

The university offers unique courses and programmes that aren’t usually available at any other institutes. The computer-based Common Admission Test (CAT) has been scheduled on 15, 16 and 17 May.

The details of the renewed fee structure are available on the website. The previous method by which an applicant could have applied for any number of courses for a specific amount stands cancelled.

New courses
The new courses on offer are a 5-year Masters degree in Bio– Ethics and MTech–Defence Technology/ Civil–Structural Engineering.

Offline applications
Offline applications are only possible for Phd, diploma, certificate and post-doctoral programs. The applicants should get the forms from the respective departments and then fill them as per the guidelines that are published in the prospectus.

Four modes of admission
* The online Common Admission Test conducted by the university (CUSAT-CAT)
* Departmental Admission Test (DAT) for Phd, post– doctoral, diploma and certificate programmes.
* BTech Lateral Entry (LET)
* For admission to MBA, one of IIM-CAT/CMAT/K–MAT eligibility is mandatory.

Reservation available
Reservations are available for various backward communities, economically weaker sections, persons with disabilities and transgender persons. Scheduled Castes/Tribes in Kerala require just pass marks for applying to almost all the courses.

Candidates from backward communities categorised as non–creamy layer will get 5% relaxation in minimum marks. If the applicant possesses GATE score, he/she will get 5% relaxation for the cut –off marks in the admission test.

Dates to remember
Online application (UG, PG): until 7 March; 14 March with late fee (Phd, MTech, diploma aren’t included)

Online fee payment: 15 March

MTech online registration: 21 April (until 30 April with late fee)

Department application (Phd and diploma programmess at various schools and departments): 30 April

Application fee
Earlier, applicants could apply for any number of courses by paying only a specific amount. However, this method is no longer in effect now.

Following are the application fees for various courses and programmes:

Up to two test codes: Rs 1,100 (Rs 500 for SCs/STs in Kerala)

For each test code, if applications are submitted for more than two: Rs 500 (Rs 250 for SCs/ST in Kerala)

The courses have been divided into 20 codes based on the selection test (refer prospectus page number 52, 53). The applicant could get an idea about the application fee structure from the prospectus. The test codes and the respective fee amount would be displayed during the time of online application.

Applicants for MTech and MBA courses need not pay additional fee as they needn’t write the CUSAT test.

Children of Indian Persons Working in Gulf (CGW) have to pay Rs 6,100 for two test codes; however, those from the SC/ST communities from this category need to pay only Rs 5500.

Rs 500 has to be paid for each additional test code, if the candidates wish to apply for more than two. It is Rs 250 for SC/STs.

Those who are not in the CGW category should pay an additional amount of Rs 5,000 If they are applying for NRI seat. Meanwhile, the application fee is Rs 100, to be paid as demand draft (Rs 50 for SC/STs) for post-doctoral fellowship, diploma and certificate programs.

Exam centres
The entrance test for first degree/ 5– year MSc programmes would be held at all the district centres in Kerala as well as in cities like Coimbatore, Bengaluru, Mangaluru, Chennai, Delhi and Mumbai. There are test centres in all districts in the state for post-graduate programmes, LLB, LLM and lateral entry programmess.

BTech – Civil, Mechanical, Electrical and Electronics, Electronics and Communication, Computer Science, IT, Safety and Fire Engineering, Naval Architecture and Ship Building, Polymer Science, Instrumentation and Control, Marine Engineering.

5-year integrated MSc– Photonics, Computer Science (Artificial Intelligence and Data Science), Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Statistics, Biological Science.

5-year BBA, LLB Honours/ BCom LLB Honours.

3-year BVoc: Business Process and Data Analytics.

BTech Lateral Entry: 6 semesters – various schools; for 3-year diploma holders.

2-year MSc: Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Statistics, Computer Science (Artificial Intelligence), Computer Science (Data Science), Forensic Science, Electronic Science, Hydrochemistry, Oceanography, Marine Geology, Marine Geophysics, Meteorology, Environmental Science and Technology, Bio Technology, Microbiology, Marine Biology, Industrial Fisheries, Econometrics and Financial Technology.

Master of Fisheries Science in Seafood Safety and Trade.
MVoc: Mobile Phone Application Development/Technology and Management Consulting.

1-year diploma/certificate programs: French/Japanese/ German/ Communicative English/Translation, Journalism and Hindi Computing/Intellectual Property Rights.

Limited period programs: French/Japanese/German/Communicative English/Arabic/Communicative Hindi.

Advanced Certificate: Medical Law, Clinical Research, Bio–Ethics

Besides the main campus in Kalamassery, CUSAT has centres in Kochi Lakeside and at Pulinkunnu too. Moreover, the candidates can pursue Phd programs at centres that are approved by the university.

Additional Information
Applicants who do not have GATE score need to qualify the respective department tests.

The selection to MTech Marine Technology is based on the rank scored by the candidate in the national Graduate Aptitude Test-Biotechnology (GAT-B) (www.rcb.res.in/GATB); however, the GATE score wouldn’t be considered.

The admission to BTech Marine Engineering would be based on the rank scored for the entrance test conducted by the Indian Maritime University (www.imu.edu.in)
