IISER BS-MS programmes: Know who all are eligible for admission

The Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) is an autonomous institute that offers advanced research-based studies in basic Science subjects. Its dual degree BS–MS programmes are much sought-after by Science undergraduates as they allows to pursue a bachelor's degree (BS) and master's degree (MS) simultaneously.

The central government has instituted the centres of IISER at seven Indian cities – Thiruvananthapuram, Mohali, Kolkata, Pune, Bhopal, Tirupati and Berhampur (Odisha).

All programmes are not offered at all the centres.

Applications for the Admission Test, which was earlier known as Aptitude Test, could be submitted via www.iiseradmission.in.

The application fee for the Admission Test is Rs 2,000. Scheduled Caste/Tribe candidates and persons with disabilities need to pay Rs 1,000. The fee could be paid online.

Maths as a core subject in Plus-Two is mandatory only for admission to the 4-year BS courses. Those who are awaiting Class-12 results too can apply.

Those who had secured admission in the IISER earlier, those who did not join despite getting admission or have cancelled the admission need not apply as they wouldn’t be considered for the admission process.

Candidates who scored more than 12 marks through revaluation of answer sheets should upload the original marksheet in the application portal. The latest marks should be noted in the application.

Important dates
Application could be submitted from 29 April to 29 May.

The IISER Admission Test has been scheduled on 3 July.

Those who apply based on Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana and Joint Entrance Examination should apply from 11 to 15 September.

Programmes
5-year BS–MS: Biological, Chemical/ Data/ Earth and Climate/ Earth and Environmental/ Geological/ Mathematical Sciences.

5-year BS–MS: Physics/ Maths/ Biology/ Chemistry/ Science.

4-year BS: (Only at the Bhopal centre): Chemical Engineering/ Data Science and Engineering/ Electrical Engineering and Computer Science/ Economic Sciences.

3 channels
1. State/Central Boards (SCB): At least 75% seats would be filled via this channel. Applicants should have completed Plus-Two in the Science stream. Besides, they have to score impressive scores in the IISER–Aptitude Test. 2022.

There will be Multiple Choice Questions from Maths, Physics, Chemistry and Biology. The questions carry 3 marks. However, ¾ marks will be deduced for each wrong answer. Syllabus, model questions and mock tests are available on the website. Usually, the minimum marks that have to be scored by candidates of each school board is published in the notification.

2. Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY, www.kvpy.iisc.ernet.in): Those who are eligible in more than one stream in KVYP can apply by citing the stream in which they scored the highest rank.

3. Excellence in this year’s Joint Entrance Exam (JEE) – Advanced.

Important riders
Even if the school boards determine the final marks by taking the aggregate of marks scored by the candidate in Classes 11 and 12, only the marks of Class 12 would be considered for IISER admission.

In case, the applicant is a 3-year diploma holder, then the marks of the third year would be taken. Candidates applying via KVPY/IIT–JEE channels need not write the IISER Aptitude Test.

Those who have passed Plus-Two in 2021, 2022 with 60% aggregate marks can seek admission through three channels.

Scheduled Caste/Tribe candidates and persons with disabilities can apply with 55% marks.

Separate online applications should be submitted for the 3 channels.
