How to become a pilot? Earn licence, get training in Thiruvananthapuram

The Rajiv Gandhi Academy for Aviation Technology, Thiruvananthapuram, which is a Kerala Government undertaking, will receive applications for Commercial Pilot License (CPL) programme till January 30. Successful candidates will be awarded commercial pilot licenses along with Instrument Ratings.

Eligibility criteria
The candidates should have passed with 50% marks (all subjects) in Class 12 or equivalent and 55% aggregate marks in Maths, Physics and English. For Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe candidates, this is 45% and 50% marks, respectively. They should attain a minimum age of 17 years as on April 1, 2023.

The course duration is three years.

The candidates should be in good health condition. Selected candidates may join with Class II Medical Fitness Certificate, a prerequisite for Student Pilot License and to join a flying school.

They have to subsequently submit a Class-I Medical Fitness Certificate provided by centers/doctors, approved by the Director General of Civil Aviation. One can check the list of approved centers and doctors by logging into the DHCA website.

Fees
The total fees for single engine training come to Rs 28.70 lakh, which can be remitted in five installments. If the trainees wish to do CPL with Multi-Engine endorsement on Piper Seneca PA 34, they have to undergo an additional 15 hours of flying training and pay an extra Rs 6 lakh towards fees. This is excluding tax.

Selection process
Usually, there are two stages – Written Test and Interview. However, only the interview will be held if the number of applications is less.

• Written Test: This test comprises objective-type questions of Plus-Two level from subjects General English, Maths, Physics, Geography, Reasoning (IQ), and General Aviation. The cut-off marks for SC/ST candidates will be 5% less than that fixed for General category candidates. The centres to be allotted for written examination will be intimated in due course.

• Interview: Candidates will be shortlisted for interview based on the marks they obtained in the written test. The date will be informed later. Training will start by April/May.

How to apply
The application form should be downloaded from the academy website. The duly filled application, along with the prescribed fees and documents, may be sent to the academy by post so that it is received before January 30.

The application fee is Rs 4,000/ for General Category candidates and Rs 2,000 for SCs/STs. Payment is to be made through a Demand Draft in favour of The Executive Vice Chairman, Rajiv Gandhi Academy for Aviation Technology, Thiruvananthapuram (Payable at Thiruvananthapuram).
