Students came out of exam centers with happy faces on Wednesday as most of them found the Malayalam paper 2, the last of this year’s SSLC (State Secondary Leaving Certificate) examinations, easy.

A total of 17 questions based on 10 lessons. Those who have studied well could score full four marks in the first section consisting of four questions. However, some of them might have found question number 2 and 4 a bit difficult.

Students need to attempt only two out of the question numbers from 6 to 8. Question 8 asked the students to split the sentence into two without diluting the meaning. Those who read the question two to three times and attempted to write the answer carefully could score the full two marks. Most would have attempted the easier question numbers 6 and 7.

Those who have studied the lessons well might have faced no issues in writing the answers to question numbers 9 to 14, which carries four marks each.

However, question number 11 might have troubled most of them. It asked the students to write about the relevance of lines ‘nadamayi… spandichha teeyullezhuttukal’ from the lesson ‘Ammayude Ezhuttukal’ (Mother’s Letters). To answer this properly, one should have a good grasp of the mother tongue.

Of the three questions (15 to 17) in the last section, which require the students to write the answers elaborately in at least one page, two were easy. Question number 15, which asked students to critically review the character ‘Marcose’ of the story ‘Kozhiyum Kizhaviyum’ (Hen and the old woman), could have been easily answered by those who have read the story with interest. The next question was to write an analysis of the mentality of the new generation who are not able to accept the elderly, based on the lesson ‘Ammathottil’. Those who regularly go through newspapers might have succeeded in answering the question well by including contemporary incidents to buttress the points.

The last question was to prepare an essay on the topic ‘Patradharmam Ente Kazhchapadil’ (The role of newspapers in my view) based on the lesson ‘Patraneethi’. Regular reading of newspapers and making observations out of the same is vital for answering the question well.
