Govt keen on protecting public schools: V Sivankutty

Kochi: Education Minister V Sivankutty said that the state government is basing its activities on a policy of protecting the public schools in the state. He was speaking at the inaugural function of the new building of Edakochi Government High School on Thursday.

About Rs 3000 crore has been allotted to construct school buildings as part of the initiative to strengthen public education. On the occasion of the Government's second anniversary, 76 school buildings were inaugurated. Steps will be taken to upgrade the Edakochi Government School to a higher secondary school, he added.

Schools are making remarkable preparations ahead of the re-opening of schools after the summer break, the minister noted. Repairs will be completed before the students return to classes. The school premises, classrooms, and toilets will be cleaned.

The safety of children will be ensured in schools where construction work is going on. Drinking water tanks, wells, etc in schools will be disinfected, and clean drinking water will be provided to the children. The minister declared that schools would reopen on June 1.

The new building of Edakochi Government High School under the Kochi Municipal Corporation was constructed by spending Rs 1 crore allotted by the Department of General Education. The building was approved in 2019 under a project implemented as part of the Public Education Protection Campaign.
