Thiruvananthapuram: The 61,000 reserved plus one seats that are left vacant due to shortage of applicants have been turned into merit seats. The third allotment was published by including these seats. Now, around 80,694 candidates who couldn’t find seats in the first two allotments would get admission.

The students who got seats in the third allotment should secure their admission until afternoon on 4 July. As the crucial stages of admissions would end after that, those who got allotment should secure permanent admission by paying the fees. Meanwhile, the first stage of admission to the management and community seats in aided schools and unaided schools too would end on 4 July. The classes for the plus one students begin on 5 July. The supplementary admission process would continue after that.

51,385 candidates who opted for temporary admission got higher options in the third allotment. As the three allotments in the main stage of admissions comes to an end, 2,99,309 seats among a total of 3,02,108 merit seats got filled. Now, there are 2799 seats more vacant. Meanwhile, 254 students got admission in the sports quota.

After including the vacant reserved seats, the number of general merit seats have gone up to 2,11,560 in the third round of allotment. In the reserved categories, there are enough applicants only in the Ezhava, Thiyya, Billava and Muslim categories. Meanwhile, there was a shortage of applicants for most of the seats that were reserved for other categories. The number of applicants to the Kushava, Kudumbi, Sheevara, Christian OBC, language minorities and visually impaired categories were less than one thousand. Interestingly, among the 18,460 seats that were reserved for the economically weaker sections among the upper castes, allotment was required only for 6652 seats. Even though there are 7848 seats in the sports quota, the number of applicants is just 5491.

Shortage of allotment in northern districts
Even though around 80,694 candidates who got seats in third allotment are from northern districts like Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur and Palakkad, there are many more students who haven’t received allotment yet. Most of them may have to rely on the community and management seats in the aided schools or unaided schools. The government hopes that there wouldn’t be any shortage of seats after the admission to those seats are over.

Meanwhile, Minsiter V Shivankutty had said that inspections would be conducted at the taluk and panchayat levels after the first round of allotment to allow more seats and temporary batches.
