Abnormal Psychology is a major branch of science which deals with issues such as people’s unusual behaviour, addictions and change in temperament. Professionals engaged in this sector seek solutions to these as well as related problems. A wide area, Abnormal Psychology also offers huge job opportunities and high pay packages.
In fact, there are three distinct professions involving Abnormal Psychology – Clinical Psychology, Counselling and Social Work. While Clinical Psychologists deal with acute cases, Counsellors solve issues which are not so serious.
Clinical Psychologists
Clinical Psychologists start their work with a PhD. They also need specific licences to practice in some countries.
Clinical psychologists conduct various tests to identify the problem faced by an individual. They offer counselling and may also prescribe medicines. The aim of clinical psychologists is helping affected people regain their health. However, problems are often solved without medicines. People of all ages, especially the youth, encounter various unsolved issues which could be discussed with clinical psychologists.
A related, but distinct profession is that of Forensic Psychologists, who deal with the psychological issues of criminals.
Counsellors
A postgraduation in Psychology or Counselling is required to work as counsellors. In some countries, a degree in these branches is sufficient.
People approach counsellors for issues such as unreasonable anger, hatred, anxiety and suicidal tendencies. The support of counsellors is required for some individuals during the death of a relative, divorce and failure in love. Other problems needing counselling include alcoholism and marital disputes.
Social workers
A postgraduate degree is the basic qualification to become a social worker, along with a licence. People with various emotional issues and abnormal psychological behaviour approach social workers. When social workers are unable to solve such problems, they refer the affected persons to doctors or hospitals.
