Masters/doctoral scholarships in Mathematics: Apply by Nov 30; exam on January 20

NBHM (National Board of Higher Mathematics) has invited applications for Doctoral 2024 and Masters 2024 scholarships. NBHM, a Central government institution under the Department of Atomic Energy which promotes higher studies and research in Mathematics, will conduct a common three-hour test on January 20, 2024, starting at 10.30 am to select candidates for the two scholarships. An interview will follow the test in March.

Candidates can apply for either one or both scholarships. Two separate shortlists will be prepared for the interview. The final ranks would be decided based on the performance of the candidates in the test and interview along with other criteria, if necessary. The selection list will be published on April 15.

Exam details
There will be 52 centres for the exam, including Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi, Kozhikode, Chennai, Bengaluru, Mumbai and Delhi. 

The deadline to apply online is 11.59 pm on November 30 and the website is www.nbhmexams.in.

The procedure to apply is explained on the website. The application fee is Rs 400 for one programme and Rs 600 for both. There is also an option to apply till 11.59 pm on December 2 by paying a fine.

Institutions
The following institutions consider the scores in the NBHM’s exam for PhD / Integrated PhD enrolment: IISER Thiruvananthapuram / Pune / Mohali / Berhampur; Harish Chandra Research Institute Prayagraj (Allahabad); Institute of Mathematical Sciences, Chennai; NICER, Bhubaneswar and Kerala School of Mathematics, Kozhikode.

In a departure from last year, candidates have to submit separate applications for IMSc, Chennai in December.

Masters scholarship
Three streams are covered under this scholarship: A two-year programme having a bachelor's degree as eligibility for admission / Last two years of the five-year integrated master's programme / First two years of the integrated PhD for which the eligibility to join is a bachelor's degree.
The monthly scholarship amount is Rs 8,000 for two years. Students in the second year of their programme will receive the scholarship only for a year. Students have to enrol by 2024-25 or earlier. 

Those who are currently receiving scholarships such as DST-INSPIRE and KVPY will not be selected. Candidates who had been selected for Masters Scholarship earlier, but did not utilize it can apply again.

The decision on granting scholarships to students undergoing the six-year Integrated MEd course will be taken by zonal coordinators.

Doctoral scholarship
Candidates who are undergoing a four-year PhD programme in Mathematics will be considered for this scholarship. If necessary, the scholarship will be extended to the fifth year. However, the academic progress of the candidates will be evaluated each year before granting the scholarship. They should also enrol for PhD by January 2025.

The scholarship amount is Rs 35,000 every month for the first two years and Rs 42,000 afterwards. In addition, an annual grant of Rs 40,000 will be sanctioned, apart from house rent allowance as per Central norms. 

Those currently receiving scholarships such as CSIR, UGC and DST-INSPIRE cannot claim a Doctoral Scholarship.
