Apply now for research programmes in IITs, institutes

If you are looking to pursue research programmes, here is the list of four institutions of national importance, including IITs, for which applications can be submitted now.

1) IIT Palakkad - Post-Doctoral Fellowship; 
The research subjects: Biological sciences and engineering; chemistry; civil/computer science/electrical/mechanical engineering; data science; humanities and social sciences; mathematics, physics.

Eligibility for admission: For PhD: Preferably, candidates should be below 35 years of age although those aged up to 40 will be considered. Five years of relaxation will be given in age to women, transgender persons, backward classes, financially backward classes, scheduled communities and differently-abled sections. Those who have submitted their PhD thesis are also eligible to apply. Such candidates are required to submit the certificate within six months of being appointed as Post-Doctoral Fellows. The candidates must find a mentor from among the teachers at the IIT Palakkad and obtain his/her consent. If there is more than one mentor, consent from all of them should be obtained. 

For Fellowship: The duration of the programme is two years. It may be extended by one year after assessing the candidate’s performance in research. 

Those who have one year of experience after obtaining their PhD will be given a fellowship amount of Rs 61,000 per month. If the candidate has two years’ experience, the emolument will be Rs 67,000. If the candidate has only submitted the thesis, then the payment will be Rs 58,000. In addition to this, a contingency grant of Rs 1 lakh will be given to all the candidates every year. Those who are not using the hostel accommodation will receive 9% of the fellowship amount as a house rent allowance. Medical benefits are also extended to the candidates.

 2) IIT Roorkee - Full-time PhD
Although the institution became an IIT in 2001, it has a heritage of 175 years. 

Subjects for research: Architecture and planning; biosciences and bioengineering; civil/chemical/computer science/electronics and communication/earthquake, electrical mechanical and industrial/metallurgical and materials/instrumentation engineering; chemistry, design, humanities and social sciences, hydrology, hydro and renewable energy, management studies, mathematics, physics, transportation, disaster management and mitigation, nanotechnology, photonics and quantum technology, space science.

The eligibility conditions for admission are given in the information bulletin on the website. Candidates can apply for more than one department.

There are research programmes in the subjects of paper technology, polymer and process engineering, applied mathematics and scientific computing at the Saharanpur campus of the institution. 

There are also PhD programmes in coordination with universities in countries such as Canada and France. The applications can be submitted till February 28, 2024. 3)    Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Ayurveda
The Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences (CCRAS - website ccras.nic.in) will accept online applications for Post-Doctoral Fellowship till December 31. Those who hold PhD or postgraduate degree in Ayurveda or PhD in related sciences are eligible to apply. The candidates should have published their research thesis. The admission is limited to 10 candidates. The research will be for two years. There is a provision for extending the programme by one more year. Generous financial benefits will be granted to the candidates. Details are available on the website.

4) National Agri-Food Biotechnology Institute
The NABI situated at Mohali which functions under the Central Ministry of Biotechnology will accept online applications till December 16 for admission to PhD programmes. The website is: https://nabi.res.in/site/career

Research can be done for 5 to 7 years in the subjects of agricultural/food/nutrition/plant molecular biotechnology; bioinformatics, nano biosciences, post-harvest technology, functional foods, genomics, and computational biology. 

The candidates should have passed MSc/M. Tech in life sciences, M.Pharm, MVSc, or MBBS with a minimum of 55% marks. For members of scheduled communities, backwards and differently-abled sections, 50% marks are sufficient. The candidates should also have the examination score of UGC-CSIR or equivalent fellowship entrance examination.
