New Delhi: Complaints are pouring in from various quarters, including students who are the key stakeholders, about the calculation method of the percentile in JEE main exams. Social media platforms including X, formerly Twitter, were abuzz with complaints regarding this after results were out early on Tuesday morning.

The Joint Entrance Exam (JEE) formerly known as the All India Engineering Entrance Exam (AIEEE) is a standardised computer-based test for various undergraduate engineering programmes.

Aryan Agarwal of Delhi, who scored 238 out of 300, complained that while he got only 99.088 percentile some others who got the same marks were awarded a higher percentile. Aryan had written the exam on January 27, hinting that those who attempted the JEE main exam on other days managed to score better percentiles, pointing to a systemic flaw.

A Lucknow-based student charged that he got 163 marks, and while he was expecting a percentile above 96, he got only 93 percentile.

A student who attempted the exam on January 27 and scored 140 marks got 89 percentile while others who appeared for the exams on January 31 slots got 75 marks but managed to score 89 percentile, some students pointed out.

The National Testing Agency (NTA), which conducts the exams, has rejected the charges of students, saying there have been no flaws in the calculation of percentiles and all students were awarded percentiles based on their performance.

Officials said the exams conducted on various days will have different standards and hence the apprehension. The NTA opts for a percentile system to achieve some sort of uniformity in percentiles, officials said.

Telangana dazzles

The majority of candidates who are in the hundred percentile bracket are from Telangana– seven. Three each from Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan and Maharashtra are in the hundred percentile bracket. While there were two students each from Delhi and Haryana in the same bracket.

One student each from Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Gujarat are also in the elite 100 percentile list.

The results of architecture and planning will be out in a few days, authorities informed.

Aspirants can apply for the JEE main second session to be held between April 4-15, till March 2.

Vague questions dropped

Authorities have dropped some questions from JEE paper as there was confusion about the answers.

A physics question that appeared in the January 27-31 second shift exams, Jan 29 first shift exam and Jan 30 second shift exam has been dropped. Two questions that appeared in the second shift exam of Feb 1 have also been dropped. Marks will be awarded to all participants regardless of whether they attempted these questions.

One question that appeared in the Physics exam of the first shift on Jan 30 had two correct options and those who attempted either of these have been granted marks.
