Students keen on pursuing graduate programmes abroad would have heard of the GRE (Graduate Record Examinations). Here are the important details regarding the test.

GRE is the eligibility exam to pursue master’s and PhD programmes in the US, Canada and certain other countries. The test has three sections – Analytical Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning and Verbal Reasoning - which have to be answered in around one hour and 58 minutes.

The computer-based test takes place several times a year at various centres. In fact, candidates can take the test at a convenient place and time – even from their home, if the stipulated facilities for the online exam are available.

GRE scores are considered for studies in most disciplines, including business, law, management, science and engineering. High scores will also help the students earn scholarships.

Subject tests are offered in maths, physics and psychology. Scores in the tests will be considered by institutions for higher studies in these subjects.

Candidates who could not obtain high scores may attempt GRE again, after an interval of at least 21 days. The interval is 14 days for subject tests. The scores are valid for five years.

It would be ideal for undergraduate students to start appearing for GRE during their final year itself. Test centres for GRE include Thiruvananthapuram, Kozhikode, Kochi and Coimbatore.

Things to note

GRE is only one among the various eligibility criteria for admissions. Institutions abroad will consider academic excellence, recommendation letters, statement of purpose and extracurricular activities to admit students. In fact, certain institutions do not even insist on GRE scores.
