UPSC civil services results out, 7 Malayalis in top 60

New Delhi: The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has announced the results of the Civil Services Examination. Shakti Dubey secured the first rank in this year’s selection list, which includes 1,009 candidates. Harshita Goyal and D A Parag obtained the second and third positions, respectively.
Several candidates from across the country ranked in the top 60. Notable among the Malayali candidates in the list are B Shivachandran (23), Alfred Thomas (33), R Monicka (39), P Pavithra (42), Malavika G Nair (45), G P Nandana (47), and Sonnet Jose (54).
Toppers from varied backgrounds
Shakti Dubey, who completed her Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry from the University of Allahabad, qualified with political science and international relations as her optional subject, according to a statement issued by the commission.
Harshita Goyal, a BCom graduate from MS University of Baroda, secured the second rank, also opting for political science and international relations as her optional subject.
Dongre Archit Parag, who holds a Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from VIT Vellore, stood third with philosophy as his optional subject.
Shah Margi Chirag, a Bachelor of Engineering in Computer Engineering from Gujarat Technological University, Ahmedabad, secured the fourth rank with sociology as her optional subject, while Aakash Garg, a B.Tech graduate in Computer Science from Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, Delhi, obtained the fifth rank with sociology as his optional subject.
The CSE is conducted annually in three stages—preliminary, main, and interview—by the UPSC to select officers for the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS), Indian Police Service (IPS), among others.
The preliminary examination for 2024 was held on June 16 last year, with a total of 9,92,599 candidates applying and 5,83,213 appearing. Subsequently, 14,627 candidates qualified for the written (main) examination in September 2024, and out of these, 2,845 candidates qualified for the personality test or interview.
The UPSC has recommended 1,009 candidates (725 men and 284 women) for appointment to various services. Among the top five, three are women and two are men.
The top 25 candidates include 11 women and 14 men. Their educational backgrounds range from engineering, humanities, science, commerce, medical science, to architecture, with degrees from premier institutions such as IIT, NIT, VIT, JNU, the University of Delhi, and the University of Allahabad. They have opted for a wide range of optional subjects in the main examination, including anthropology, commerce and accountancy, geography, mathematics, philosophy, physics, political science and international relations, public administration, sociology, and Tamil literature.
Additionally, the recommended candidates include 45 persons with benchmark disabilities—comprising 12 orthopedically handicapped, eight visually challenged, 16 hearing impaired, and nine with multiple disabilities.
