From assistant director to a cinematic icon: Shafi's journey through Malayalam cinema

Shafi began his cinematic journey as an assistant director in Rajasenan's 'Kanmadam.' He continued collaborating with Rajasenan on four more films, gaining valuable experience. Shafi also worked closely with his relative, the renowned director Siddique, on two projects. During this period, he served as an assistant director for 'Hitler' and 'Friends' and later worked alongside the iconic duo Rafi-Mecartin in various capacities.
After five years as an assistant director, people started asking Shafi, “When will you make a film of your own?” Though he would casually reply, “Soon, let’s see,” he secretly harboured a strong desire to direct a script written by Rafi-Mecartin. However, he was hesitant to ask them directly for such an opportunity.
The suspense finally broke on the sets of 'Thenkasipattanam' when Rafi announced, “The next story will be for my younger brother.” This marked the beginning of Shafi’s journey as an independent director. He made his directorial debut with 'One Man Show,' starring Jayaram. For Shafi, the humour and fast-paced storytelling style seen in Siddique-Lal classics like 'Ramji Rao Speaking' and 'In Harihar Nagar' laid the foundation for his approach to filmmaking. He firmly believed that preserving the charm and essence of comedy was the secret to the success of his hits, such as 'Kalyanaraman,' 'Pulival Kalyanam,' 'Thommanum Makkalum,' and 'Mayavi.'
Before entering the vibrant world of cinema, Shafi and his elder brother Rafi, who would later become a celebrated writer-director, faced a period of uncertainty. Their father’s contract business suffered losses, resulting in financial difficulties at home. Despite nurturing dreams of joining the film industry, both brothers hesitated due to its unpredictability. To support themselves, they launched a bag manufacturing business called Alma Plastics.
While the bag business thrived, Rafi was the first to take a leap into cinema. Collaborating with Mecartin, he quickly established himself as a writer. The success of his film 'Aniyan Bava Chettan Bava' gave him a strong foothold in the industry. Inspired by his brother’s achievements, Shafi decided to close the bag business and pursue his passion for cinema.
What followed was a golden era of filmmaking that brought endless laughter to Malayalis. Shafi directed a string of hits, including 'Kalyanaraman,' 'Pulival Kalyanam,' 'Thommanum Makkalum,' 'Chocolate,' 'Mayavi,' and 'Two Countries.' His most recent film, 'Aanandam Paramanandam,' was released in 2022.
Through his perseverance and dedication, Shafi has carved a unique niche for himself in Malayalam cinema. His films continue to be celebrated for the joy and entertainment they bring to audiences.
