Actor Meena recalled her friendship with the late South Indian actress Soundarya, who died in a plane crash in 2004. Speaking in an interview with Telugu actor Jagapathi Babu for Zee Cinamalu, Meena said she and Soundarya were close and that the competition between them was always healthy. "The competition between us was always healthy. She was a very talented and wonderful person. She was a close friend of mine. I was shocked to hear the news of her sudden death. To this day, I have not been able to fully recover from that shock," she said, when Jagapathi prompted her about her relationship with Soundarya.
She also revealed that she had been invited to attend the BJP's political campaign event in Andhra Pradesh and would have traveled with Soundarya on the same flight. However, she declined the invitation because she was not interested in politics. “The day the accident happened, I was supposed to go campaigning with Soundarya. I was also invited, but as I don't like politics and election campaigns, I avoided it, saying I had a shoot. I was devastated when I heard what happened after that," she said.
Soundarya was the most popular actress in Telugu industry when the tragic plane crash in Andhra Pradesh ended her life. She and her brother Amarnath passed away in the accident, creating a huge gap in the Telugu film industry. Last year, there were reports that claimed that Soundarya’s death was not an accident but a pre-planned murder, but this was later dismissed.
