Actor Shammi Thilakan, who portrayed Bhaskara Menon, the retired teacher-turned-politician in Jayan Nambiar’s ‘Vilayath Buddha, ‘expressed his gratitude for the positive reception of his character. However, he also voiced his disappointment over the negativity surrounding the film. Speaking to the media in Kochi on Tuesday, Thilakan noted that many people have been comparing his performance to that of his late father, the legendary actor Thilakan.
"I stand here today as a proud son of my father," Shammi Thilakan said. "I've always taken pride in being known by my father's name, but the appreciation I've received for my own performance in this film brings me even more joy. I believe the reason people see my father in me is because they miss him. When they catch even the faintest resemblance, they say, 'This is Thilakan himself.'"
Regarding his portrayal in the film, Thilakan humbly clarified that he does not wish to be labeled as the ‘hero’ when there is another prominent lead in the story. He joked, "Please don’t make me a zero by calling me the hero. The last time you did that, I lost out on some opportunities. While I know it's meant well, such comments can unintentionally affect those of us working in the industry."
Thilakan also defended ‘Vilayath Buddha,’ describing it as a well-made film that doesn't deserve the hate it has received. In response to criticisms about the film's length, he assured fans that the runtime had already been shortened in response to feedback.
