Mohanlal–Sreenivasan classic ‘Udayananu Tharam’ set for 4K re-release

Two decades after it first hit theatres, the cult favourite ‘Udayananu Tharam’ is set for a grand return to the big screen. The Rosshan Andrrews directorial, which memorably brought together Mohanlal and Sreenivasan, is being re-released in a restored 4K version, with reports suggesting that the film will arrive in theatres by the end of January 2026.

Originally released to both box-office success and critical acclaim, ‘Udayananu Tharam’ has since earned the reputation of being one of Malayalam cinema’s sharpest and most entertaining films about filmmaking itself. The story follows Udayabhanu, played by Mohanlal, an aspiring filmmaker navigating the politics, egos, and fragile friendships of the film industry. His journey takes a dramatic turn with the arrival of Saroj Kumar alias Rajappan, portrayed by Sreenivasan in one of his most celebrated performances, a character whose ambition and cunning leave a lasting impact on Udayabhanu’s life and career.

Produced by C Karunakaran under the Carlton Films banner, the film also features Meena as the female lead, lending emotional depth to the narrative. With its biting satire, memorable dialogues, and layered performances, ‘Udayananu Tharam’ continues to resonate with audiences, making its 4K re-release a nostalgic yet timely revisit for fans and first-time viewers alike.
