Girish A D’s films have a distinct aesthetic built around quirkiness, warmth and an easy sense of humour. His latest, the much-anticipated Onam release ‘Bethlehem Kudumba Unit’, starring Nivin Pauly and Mamitha Baiju in the lead, carries many of these familiar traits.

Unlike the briskly paced ‘Premalu’ and ‘Super Sharanya’, ‘Bethlehem Kudumba Unit’ takes its time. The film revolves around Justin (Nivin Pauly), a man approaching middle age who remains unmarried. His life takes an interesting turn when Ashley (Mamitha Baiju) moves into the house next door, leading to a connection between the two.

From the opening portions, ‘Bethlehem Kudumba Unit’ is packed with energy, humour and a distinctly youthful sensibility. Girish A D once again leans into contemporary references, including plenty of Gen Z humour, while keeping the film rooted in its characters and their relationships.

Nivin Pauly is the heart of the film. As Justin, he slips comfortably back into the charming, slightly awkward persona that audiences have long associated with him. His easy screen presence carries much of the film, particularly in its lighter moments.

Sangeeth Prathap and Roshan Shanavas are also welcome additions to the ensemble, bringing their own energy to the proceedings. Mamitha Baiju, meanwhile, gets an opportunity to move away from the bubbly characters audiences have largely seen her play in recent films. Her Ashley is more grounded, giving her a different space to explore as a performer.
