Amrit Appadan—the chef who set up hearth in many a damsel’s heart through the ‘Dhe Chef’ Reality show in Mazhavil Manorama. For many people, the very word chef conjures up images of the face of the sulaimani-sipping handsome lad Faisi in Ustad Hotel. You must have also chanced upon such a stylish bloke on TV recently. Yup, that's our Amrit Jose Appadan. Amrit himself does not know how, but a call came for him from Mazhavil channel one fine morning. He spoke in his labored Malayalam, thanks to a Riyadh upbringing. Amrit is Executive Chef at Hilton Gardens hotel in Thiruvananthapuram. He was a judge in a few cooking contests and feels that maybe that is how the organizers rounded in on him. 1000 people turned up for the program’s audition. The show has participants ranging from a Plus Two student to sixty year olds. When he was younger, his friends used to make fun of him a lot calling him a dishwasher. As he was a very naughty kid, it was his mother who gave Amrit prawns and fish to experiment with. After preparing the prawns, he gradually moved to regular cooking. It was his habit since quite early to stamp his own signature in all his dishes. Amrit was also keen on keeping things in their place, switching off the gas, etc along with his cooking. (Dishwashing however remained an unloved activity for him). He studied Hospitality Management at Poona. During study vacations he worked in Saudi Arabia and Hyderabad. He worked as chef in hotels like Taj and Marriott. Amrit is just 25 years old, while his colleagues are people with twenty years of experience. Therefore there is a lot to learn from them, according to him. And he grasps them all. It is the same with Chef Pradeep and Chef Anjali in 'Dhe Chef'. Amrit is passionate about not only cooking, but swimming, cycling and rock climbing. Father Jose Appadan who was auditor and head nurse in Riyadh and mother Eliyamma enjoy their retired life visiting places. Elder brother Ajay Jose is an engineer in Infopark. Amrit’s fan following leaps higher with each passing episode. He offers a big thanks to those who find the time to send him messages and emails. This is what he has to tell girls—On some days, when he enters work at 5 in the morning, he will be able to get off by only 2 pm the next day. Loving a chef needs oodles of understanding.
