Kochi: For the students of Sacred Hearts college, Thevara, _Daya_ means a lovingly prepared meal packed in plantain leaf. The programme comprises offering packed meals to the street dwellers, which has been executed religiously by the students. The initiative, started by the sociology department of the college, has now completed 6 years. A sense of society doesn't just evolve from textbooks, the students were emphasizing through this deed. This admirable initiative started off with the distribution of packed food to street children. It was an eye-opener for other departments, that joined in as well. Now, every student of the college subscribes to the sentiment that is _Daya_, and is an active member. Food parcels are collected every Thursday. The responsibility is borne by one class every week. The parcels that get collected by 11 are distributed among street dwellers near Kaloor bus stand, High Court junction and railway station. They're supported by 'Love and Care' charitable society. Around 5000 people have, by now, relished their food. N. S. Suraj, Joshmi Johnson and Femi Ann Mathew are the coordinators of _Daya_.
