Here is a pretty simple recipe of rasam that is spicy and a bit sour.

Rasam is a watery stock that is an integral part of typical South Indian meals. You could either have rasam with rice or enjoy it as a spicy and hot soup.

1 ½ cup water in which lentils have been boiled (to make the rasam thicker)
½ tsp turmeric powder
1 tsp chilli powder
1 tsp pepper powder
1 tsp coriander powder
½ tsp cumin
5 shallots
2 green chillies
4 garlic cloves
1 small piece ginger
1 big tomatoes (diced)
Coriander leaves
Coconut oil
1 small piece asafoetida
Tamarind water
2 sprigs curry leaves
Mustard seeds as required
Fenugreek seeds as required

Crush the shallots, ginger, garlic and green chillies
Boil the crushed ingredients, turmeric powder, chilli powder, pepper powder, coriander powder, cumin, tomato and coriander leaves in lentil water and tamarind water
You could add more water if required
Heat coconut oil and splutter mustard seeds and fenugreek seeds
Sauté curry leaves and asafoetida
Add this tempering into the rasam
Mix well
Enjoy the rasam while it is still hot.
