New Delhi: The guidelines for ensuring the quality of specialty breads would come into effect from Monday. The whole wheat bread or the garlic bread should now contain the key ingredients in stipulated amount. The latest guidelines aim to ensure the quality of at least twenty types of specialty breads.

As per the proposed guidelines, whole wheat bread should contain at least seventy five percent wheat while brown bread should contain fifty percent wheat. Meanwhile, there should be at least 2% garlic and other complimenting natural ingredients in garlic bread. The oatmeal bread should contain 15% oats. From tomorrow onwards, whole grain bread should contain 10% grain powders other than wheat for the next one year. It should be increased to 20% after that.

Similarly, milk bread should contain 6% milk and there should be 5% honey in honey bread. The guidelines state that cheese bread needs to have 10% cheese. Fruit and raisin breads should at least have 10% of the key ingredients. Meanwhile, 15% protein should be included in the protein enriched bread.

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India came up with the regulations as it has noticed manufacturers selling products that contain meagre quantities of special ingredients on high prices.
