'Aanjili chakka' makes a ‘mass’ re entry in the markets with Rs 200 – 300 per kg

Muvattupuzha: Wild jackfruits that are abundantly available in our backyards had lost its glamour for a while as various types of fruits entered the markets. However, the locally available fruit has made a grand comeback during the summer season as it is extremely delicious and refreshing too.

A kilogram of organic wild jackfruit costs Rs 200 – 300. Many wayside fruit shops are now lined with fresh wild jackfruit that are mostly brought from Idukki district. You would get up to 3 fruits when you purchase a kilo. There are wayside fruit vendors who sells up to one hundred kilos per day.

Puzhukku made with the outer skin of the wild jackfruit and fried seeds of it are some of the snacks that excite nostalgia in many. Besides, fried and powdered wild jackfruit seeds mixed with honey is considered as an excellent home remedy for asthma. The scientific name of wild jackfruit is Artocarpus Hirsutus.
