Most people hate chopping onions as it burns eyes and force you to shed tears. However, onions and shallots are unavoidable in most dishes, especially in the non-vegetarian items.

The curries taste amazing only when the onions are sauteed nicely in oil. Here are a few tips to keep tears away while cutting onions or shallots.

Soak the onions
After peeling the skin, cut the onions in half and soak them in water for at least ten minutes. This prevents the gas emission. You can then cut the onions into thin slices. However, the onions shouldn’t be soaked for longer as they can absorb too much water and turn mushy.

Keep them in fridge
Wash the onions and store them in containers. Keep the container in the refrigerator for at least ten minutes. In case you need the onions soon, keep them in freezer for five minutes. However, make sure that the onions do not get frozen.

Apple cider vinegar
Mix some apple cider vinegar and salt in a bowl of water. Soak halved onions in it for at least five minutes. You could also rub vinegar on the chopping board to keep tears away.
