A popular seafood address in Kochi, shaped by the flavours of the nearby Arabian Sea, Karthiyayini is known for its robust, coastal-style cooking. What began as a local favourite has steadily drawn diners from outside the state as well, including film personalities passing through the city.

Staff at Karthiyayini were taken by surprise recently when a group of Tamil film stars walked in during a busy service. Actors Ravi Mohan (formerly Jayam Ravi), Sivakarthikeyan, Atharvaa and Sreeleela visited the restaurant and sat down for a relaxed meal.

Each of them had a clear favourite. Ravi Mohan particularly enjoyed the Neymeen Kanthari. Sivakarthikeyan picked the Karthiyayini special tiger prawns and the Kalanji fry, while Atharvaa preferred squid cooked with kanthari chillies. Though they sampled several dishes, the actors reportedly said the flavours stood out. Restaurant owner Jajina told Manorama Online that the staff were equally surprised by the unannounced visit.

Celebrities are not new to the restaurant. Recently, Telugu superstar Mohan Babu’s visit had also made news. Known for his fondness for spicy food, he enjoyed Kalanji with green chillies, tiger prawns and fish roe along with his meal. He reportedly mentioned that fish roe is difficult to find in Andhra Pradesh and said he would return to Kochi just to eat at Karthiyayini again, Jajina said.

The regular rush at the restaurant suggests that many diners return after their first visit. Fresh fish is sourced daily for the curries, which adds to the depth of flavour the place is known for.

Seafood biryani, Karimeen Tharavaadu, fish curry, Avoli Kanthari, Kalanji fry, Karthiyayini special tiger prawns, prawn roast and grilled Neymeen are among the dishes with a steady following.

Karthiyayini currently has three outlets in Kerala — at Kundannoor in Ernakulam, Athani near Kochi International Airport, and Ottappunna Junction in Cherthala. A fourth outlet is set to open soon in Coimbatore.
