If your Munnar itinerary usually stops at tea gardens and viewpoints, it is time to add something deliciously different. The strawberry harvest has begun at the farm run by Horticorp near Munnar town, and visitors are welcome to step in, look around and take home a slice of the season.

On Silent Valley Road, rows of low green plants are dotted with bright red fruit that look almost too pretty to pluck. This is not a distant farm you read about. It is one you can walk through. After a four year gap, strawberries have returned here, and the farm has opened its gates for tourists who want more than just photographs.

At Rs 600 a kilo, the berries are positioned as a premium treat, but what you are really paying for is freshness. These strawberries are harvested and sold on site, which means they move from plant to punnet in a matter of hours.

A farm visit with flavour
The experience begins with a short walk through the cultivation area, where staff explain how the berries are grown. Raised beds lined with plastic mulch keep weeds away and help retain moisture. A drip irrigation system feeds each plant carefully, ensuring steady growth and consistent flavour. This year’s crop features the Nebula variety, sourced from Pune and known for its large size and bright colour.

Children are often the first to spot the ripest berries, pointing excitedly at the flashes of red hidden under leaves. Adults, meanwhile, rediscover the simple pleasure of fruit that smells sweet even before you taste it.

Why Munnar strawberries taste different
Strawberries thrive in cool climates with moderate sunlight, and Munnar’s altitude provides just that. The chill in the air slows down ripening slightly, allowing sugars to develop more evenly. The result is fruit that is juicy, aromatic and naturally sweet without being cloying.

Because the berries are harvested and sold at the farm, they reach buyers without long transport or storage. That freshness makes a noticeable difference in flavour and texture.

How to enjoy them
If you are visiting Munnar, consider buying a small box and enjoying them plain to appreciate their natural sweetness. They also pair well with whipped cream, ice cream or a drizzle of local honey. For a quick treat, slice them over warm pancakes or blend them into a chilled milkshake.

With the harvest now underway, the window to taste this seasonal delight is limited. For travellers heading to the hills, the strawberry fields on Silent Valley Road offer not just a photo stop but a sweet reminder of how Kerala’s high ranges continue to surprise food lovers.
