Instant bread-gulab jamun

Gulab jamun

Be it a wedding, deepavali or pooja. There is no celebration without gulab jamuns in Indian households. This yummy sweet balls have made their way in to the dessert menu also, thanks to their wonderful association with ice creams.

This recipe gives you a shortcut to make this delightful dish using bread slices. And guess what, only an expert will be able to find the difference between the ones made with bread and flour.  

Ingredients
8 slices of white bread
½ cup milk
2 dsp sugar
½ cup water
½ tsp cardamom powder
1 tsp rose water
6 almonds (optional)
2 cups oil

Preparation
Dilute the sugar in the water
Boil it until the mix turns thick
Add the rose water and stir again till the mix turn syrupy
Add the cardamom powder in the syrup and set aside
Remove the crust and chop the bread slices into small pieces
Place them in bowl, add the milk and gently mush them using fingertips to make a soft dough
When the dough is ready, grease your hands using oil or ghee and roll the dough to small fine balls
Heat oil in a pan and drop the balls to it gently
Fry until the balls turn golden brown
Now drain them and add to the sugar syrup
Place sliced almonds on top of the jamuns
Let the jamuns soak in the sugar syrup for at least 2 hours
Serve warm or chilled
