4-ingredient garam masala at home by Lakshmi Nair

garam masala

Indian cuisine is incomplete without adding a dash of fresh and fragrant garam masala powder. Here's food vlogger Lakshmi Nair showing us how to prepare amazing homemade garam masala powder using just four ingredients.

You can prepare this mixture in a jiffy and use it in all your curries. The garam masala should be stored in air tight containers to retain its aroma and freshness.

50 gm fennel seeds
20 gm cardamom pods
20 gm cinnamon
20 gm cloves

Into a frying pan add the fennel seeds, cardamom, cinnamon, and cloves
Dry roast it for at least 5 minutes
Dry roasting the spices helps in releasing the aroma and makes it easier to grind into fine powder
Turn off the flame when the fennel seeds begin to splutter
Transfer the hot spices into a bowl and allow it to cool down
Do not overheat the spices
Grind these spices into fine masala powder in the small jar of your mixer.

Some people add star anise, black pepper corns and cumin as well. However, this recipe has just four ingredients and the garam masala is equally flavorsome and fragrant.
