Is it better to keep your toilet flap open or closed at all times? Things to know
Mail This Article
Most people wonder whether the toilet flap in the washroom, used by all family members, should be kept open or closed at all times. Although it may sound silly, using the flap properly is key to maintaining toilet hygiene. A few things to note to prevent infections and keep the toilets clean. Some people believe that the flap should be closed while flushing so that the viruses wouldn’t spread in the air. However, here's what studies say:
Open or closed?
A recent study notes that keeping the flap closed is not that effective in preventing infections. The viruses released into the air will stick to nearby surfaces, even if you close the flap while flushing. An invisible cloud of aerosolised droplets, called a flushing plume, is released into the air by turbulence when a toilet is flushed and lands on the surface of the sink or shelf in the washroom. Many people assume that a flushing plume could be prevented by closing the flap. However, it was found that these aerosols can escape through small openings and cracks even when the flap is closed. It shows that the spread of viruses cannot be prevented in small toilets with insufficient air circulation by keeping the toilet flap closed.
What can a closed lid prevent?
Although closing the lid cannot prevent the spread of the virus, it can definitely prevent toilet water from splashing outward. It ensures that the water from the toilet bowl doesn’t fall on the sinks, cupboards, soaps, razors and toothbrushes. Besides, keeping the flap closed will prevent the stench from the toilet from spreading into the washroom. Moreover, it will make the washroom look clean and hygienic at a glance. However, the overall hygiene of the toilet isn’t determined just by keeping the toilet flap open or closed.
How to avoid virus spread
It is important to clean and disinfect the seat, flush button, door handle, taps, and nearby surfaces to ensure the virus doesn’t spread to our hands and then into our bodies. Washrooms that have good air circulation will swiftly purify the aerosols or viruses as soon as it gets spread in the air. It is key to ensure proper ventilation in bathrooms. Besides, toothbrushes, razors and soaps should be kept inside closed cabinets if you prefer to keep them in the washrooms.
If you are away from the house for a few days, clean the toilet bowl and close the flap to keep insects and dust out. Before using the toilet bowl again, make sure to flush or clean it to maintain overall hygiene.
