Actor Salman Khan's father and veteran scriptwriter Salim Khan suffered a minor brain haemorrhage recently. The 90-year-old was put on ventilator support as his doctors wanted to investigate his health condition, PTI reported. Dr Jalil Parkar of Mumbai's Lilavati Hospital said that a procedure called DSA (Digital Subtraction Angiography) was performed on Khan. It is an X-ray that shows a patient's blood vessels by removing all other structures from the image.

What is a minor brain haemorrhage?
It is a small amount of bleeding in the brain that is detected on an MRI or a CT scan. It can cause mild injuries, sudden pain, high blood pressure, or even bumps on the head, according to the Cleveland Clinic. In some cases, even the use of blood thinners, liver diseases or blood clotting issues also lead to it. Though termed 'minor,' it can be dangerous if not treated properly. The Cleveland Clinic also says that the condition can cause permanent brain damage, and its severity depends on many factors, like the size of the bleed, duration between the bleed and the treatment, what caused it, where it is inside the skull and more.

When is DSA done?
Generally, DSA is performed on patients to check for blockages in their arteries, aneurysms (abnormal bulges in artery walls), proper blood supply, bleeding, or to guide treatment. According to Stanford Health Care, a 'contrast dye' is injected through a catheter into an artery in a patient's leg, passing it into the blood vessels in the brain. After that, X-ray images are taken to get a high-precision diagnosis and plan treatment.
