World Health Day: Stay safe from cancer with simple, doctor-recommended steps
Mail This Article
We are living in a time when the number of cancer cases in Kerala is rising at an alarming rate. Today, take any individual, and they are likely to know, either directly or indirectly, someone who has gone through some stage of cancer. On World Health Day, it is important to understand a few precautionary steps we can take to prevent this serious disease. Dr Arun R Warrier, Senior Consultant, Medical Oncology, Aster Medcity, Kochi, gives a few simple steps for the same.
Real change begins with lifestyle and diet
Our changing food habits play a significant role in the spread of cancer. It is essential to avoid highly processed foods, dishes with artificial colouring and excessive consumption of red meat. Instead, we should make it a habit to include locally grown vegetables, fruits and fibre-rich foods in our daily diet. Completely giving up tobacco and alcohol can cut the risk of cancer by half. In addition, adopting a routine of at least 30 minutes of daily exercise can help improve metabolism and strengthen the body’s immunity.
Mental well-being in the midst of a daily rush
The stress of today’s fast-paced lifestyle often contributes to a range of health issues. Even amid a busy schedule, it is important to set aside time to calm the mind. Practices such as yoga and meditation can help regulate hormonal balance, while ensuring adequate sleep is equally vital, as it is during rest that the body restores and rejuvenates itself.
Spot early, treat better
The most important step in cancer prevention is early detection. Even minor changes in the body should not be ignored. Symptoms such as unusual lumps, wounds that do not heal, or sudden weight loss should be evaluated by a specialist without delay. Detecting the disease early makes treatment far more effective. Annual health checkups and screening tests, such as mammograms and Pap smears, play a vital role in identifying cancer at an early stage. Let us commit to a conscious step towards keeping cancer at bay through healthy eating, regular exercise, and mindful living. Awareness remains our strongest defence.
